| THE COMMUNE OF SAINT MARTIN SOUS MONTAIGU | ||||||||
| ITS SITUATION The village is a part of the Cote Chalonnaise, an area of hills spread out on a north-south line to the west of the Saône valley. In the shelter of the des Vaux valley with its little stream, the Orbise, flowing down to join the Saône, south of Mercurey, Saint Martin sous Montaigu is about 12 km west of Chalon-sur-Saône. SURFACE AREA The commune has a surface area of 364 hectares. 90% of all the agricultural land in use, 151 hectares, is for wine-growing.
| HISTORY The area has been frequented by human beings since the Mousterian hunters (middle Palaeolithic flint tools), 40,000 years ago, followed later by a Gallo-Roman settlement, and Merovingian burial places. The church tower dates from 1015, and was renovated in 1555. Winegrowing dates from Roman times and is still extremely active with its AOC Burgundy, Mercurey and Mercurey premier cru wines.
